Difficulty
blackberries require low to moderate effort to manage.
∙ relatively early ripening
∙ disease resistant varieties
∙ in a moderately wet climate
Bloom
susceptibility to frost damage is more complicated with blackberries than with most species. It appears that new shoots are occasionally damaged before bloom; however, secondary buds may emerge and produce a decent crop. The bloom, itself, seems to be quite late.
Chill Hours
200-900
pH
5.5 to 6.5 (preferred), 4.5 to 7.5 (acceptable)
The floricanes (summer-bearing 2nd year growth) of earlier ripening varieties will generally avoid activity from the spotted wing drosophila (SWD).  Primocane-bearing varieties can also produce on first year growth, but the berries ripen late in the season, exposing them to SWD.

Cane borers are also quite common.  The raspberry cane borer will puncture two rings roughly 0.5 inches apart near the top of the plant.  The eggs are laid within the area, and the damage causes the top to wilt.  The rednecked cane borer generally targets the lower portion of the primocane.  Larva damage causes galls to form on the cane.  The adult beetles feed on young leaves.

While there are cold hardy blackberry species, only a few selections are capable of thriving in zone 5 or lower.  Some of them include 'Balsors Hardy', 'Fort Kent King', 'Nelson', and 'Sylvan', but very little is known about them.  A few others are listed below.

Baby Cakes is a thornless blackberry with erect canes and a dwarfing habit.  More importantly, it is supposedly quite hardy for a named cultivar, but to me, this does not seem to be the case.  The roots will survive in zone 5a (and probably zone 4 as well) like many other blackberry varieties, but no other part of the plant has made it through the winter.  Only the primocanes have produced for me, and the berries that come from them ripen near the end of the grow season here.  They might end up being too late for some of those in the north.

Kiowa is supposedly susceptible to double blossom, but I haven't seen any complaints from home-growers yet, which is a bit usual considering how common this variety used to be.  You should, at the very least, assume that it lacks the same level of resistance that many others have.

Siskiyou was significantly less productive than Marionberry during a 3 year trial that focused on the Obsidian variety.  Both of them are trailing varieties developed in the west that ripen half of their crop around the same time (Obsidian was a little earlier).  Marion was also considered to have the best flavor, but Siskiyou was a fairly close second.  Obsidian's flavor rating was equivalent to the mean.  The only significant advantage that Siskiyou had over Marion was that it was much firmer, but this is primarily a benefit for commercial operations.
